Musician, composer and arranger who also won five Grammys hailed by Michael Bublé as ‘a genius, a monster ’
Johnny Mandel, that the Oscar and Grammy-winning composer supporting the subject from M*A*S*H and much more, has died aged 94.
Details of his death have never been released. The information was declared by artist and friend Michael Feinstein, who stated: “A dear friend and outstanding composer arranger and all-around fantastic gift Johnny Mandel simply passed away. The planet won’t ever be the same with no humor, humor and wry perspective of existence and the human state. He was really beyond compare, and no one could compose or arrange how he did. Lord will we miss him. Let’s celebrate him along with his songs! He would prefer that. ”
Another tribute was paid by singer Michael Bublé, that telephoned him “a genius and a few of my favorite authors, arrangers, and characters. He was a monster. ”
Mandel was created New York in 1925, the son of an aspiring opera singer mum. He studied music in colleges such as Juilliard, also heard trumpet and trombone, discovering early use jazz bands and orchestras led by Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Dorsey and much more. He also played in a group with Alan Greenspan, who proceeded to become a longstanding seat of the US Federal Reserve. “Alan was quite bookish and a wonderful man,” Mandel later recalled. He also failed the citizenship, so we always got paid in time.
Mandel started composing and arranging, and over the years generated orchestral structures for Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and much more, but became celebrated for movie scoring. An early achievement was that the 1964 James Garner and Julie Andrews movie The Americanisation of Emily, and its own theme tune, Emily.
The subsequent season ’s The Sandpiper, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, won Mandel an Oscar for best original song, for The Shadow of Your Smile. Mandel composed it after being motivated by a California vista on the movie collection. “I found that magnificent panorama, shooting Big Sur outside on into the sea. How would you write this? I guessed, you compose it with a solo voice… I’d attempt to translate that to what it seemed like. ” Originally listed with a choir, it had been coated by Bennett, Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Astrud Gilberto and a lot more.
Mandel went to be a versatile composer, since grading everything from gritty crime dramas for example Point Blank with Lee Marvin and Harper with Paul Newman, to household pictures (Freaky Friday, Escape from Witch Mountain), along with comedies such as Caddyshack. He repeatedly worked with supervisors Hal Ashby, Sidney Lumet and Robert Altman, for whom he composed Suicide is Painless with Altman’s teenaged son Michael composing lyrics — it became the subject for M*A*S*H and its spinoff TV series, also Mandel’s most renowned work.
Mandel also won five Grammys, largely because of his structures, together with Shadow of Your Smile winning tune of this year in 1965. He also written for TV, also made Emmy nominations for dozens to TV films A Letter into Three Wives, LBJ: The Early Years and Foxfire.
